I've set this group up in order to give a more public forum to some exchanges with Tristan Vanrullen on the very different understandings of "ontology" in philosophy, information science, and applied disciplines. There's a solid reason - Tristan and I have a paper to write - but, more generally, there are confusions both within philosophy and without about the domain and scope of "ontology".

Without claiming sole authority for the philosophical discipline, I think our debates would be best oriented with respect to the traditional understanding of ontology as a branch of metaphysics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontology

In information science, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontology_(information_science) , the term "ontology" is largely the legacy of Tom Gruber. Understanding of the relation between the philosophical and the information science uses of the term depend greatly on Gruber's philosophical influences.
