Is it legit to receive FIVE reviews for a single manuscript? Moreover, most of them give substantially different evaluations of the manuscript and suggest banal changes like transforming "metapsychology" into "meta-psychology" and "You should not use "I", instead use the passive - "it was presented"". Is this a sign of incompetence of the reviewers and the journal at large or it is a common practice? Thank you!

Personally I think is normal because remembered I'd served as a reviewer for one manuscript that had gone through 4 rounds of review before it was published. It is also common that different reviewers "dictate" certain words to be used or certain references need to be cited & sometimes there can be different opinions among the reviewers on a single statement. As an author, just need to be open minded, accommodative & patient to make all corrections asked. At the same time you also need to justify your stands (if they are correct) with evidence / literature reviewed. In the event any major disagreements among the reviewers, the editor of the journal will step in. Wishing you all the best.

Usually there are two reviews, rarely three. I have not heard of five reviews.
Usually three reviewers for one paper but depending on journal standard. If the researcher receive more than three reviewers, we can give the feedback to each reviewer with a solid reason
