Do you know any source that presents a range (a limit) to the number of pages for each chapter in the PhD disserations? I have noticed that the APA and other major writing styles describe in detail the font size, font type, the margins in each page, the levels of heading, but they ignored the number of pages!!!
Of course the number of pages is affected by the type of the study and the included variables, but any suggestion beyound this?

Dear Prof, I did my PhD in UPM, and carefully followed the guidelines. Most people end up with quite a thick dissertation, and the number of pages was not specified, so that we would not be rigidly bound. My thesis was something like this: Intro 10%, Literature review 20%, Methodology 15%, Results 15%, Discussions 25%, Conclusions 10%, References etc 5%, and about 400 pages in all. That was because I chose to do a PhD by research/dissertation. Students who chose to do a PhD by coursework and thesis will have a thesis about 300 pages.

I think the number of pages is determined by the university/institution that will award the doctoral degree. I know that each university has its own guideline, so any doctoral candidate should check with his/her institution. My supervisors instructed that each chapter of my thesis should be between 8000-10,000 words.
One thing that I forgot to add to my previous comment is that the length of a PhD thesis can also be determined by the discipline. For example, a social science thesis will be longer than an engineering thesis.
Agreed with Emeka that the length of each PhD thesis depends on the awarding university based on different disciplines e.g. social science, engineering etc. For an example, I came across the length of social science PhD thesis / dissertation around 80,000 to 100,000 words (excluding appendices). Among the chapters like: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results, Discussions and Conclusions, finding the chapter with the largest portion of words are Discussion (because we need to explain in detailed the findings in relation with our conceptual framework / research model), then followed by Literature Review etc as stipulated by Miranda.
