I am a beginner (working as a student) in conducting psychotherapies with clinical and non-clinical clients. I usually face a dilemma that how many assessments one needs to do to get a clear picture of the client as I feel that any comprehensive assessment requires collecting broad range of data about the client. Although I am not conducting many tests in my current set-up (due to supervision) but I do face this doubt regularly that few more things would give a better picture. At least therapeutic formulation becomes very convenient when a therapist has vast data (like history and psychometric details). Does therapy become really efficient when one gathers lots of data about the client? Is money the only reason of not doing several tests or the time and involvement/motivation by the client which may get effected by time consuming procedures or is it something else?
Please share your views and experiences as I feel this is a doubt for many people here and everyone would be able to gain knowledge and insights from experiences of others.
