Get to understand what Bioinformatics is first and what you would want to do in it because the field covers a gamut if areas and it is required in every area!
Try to understand the biology basics also apart from the bioinformatics tools and softwares. This will give you an edge because you will eb able to understand the biological mechanism and thereby you will be able to take better decisions of which tool to use.

Leon, Every bioinformatician will be a biologist. We will ahve to know the wet lab techniques to an extent because what comes out of all those experiments will only be images and numbers. Unless we know what is the process involved, we will not e able to analyze the data. It is done otherwise too, just that the essence of bioinformatics is to bring in clearer view of biological experiments for which yo need to be a biologist though we might not end up doing the actual experiments.
