I have download climatic data in .nc format (netcdf) and these data contain monthly values of a climatic parameter from 1948 to 2008 for the whole globe. The files are too large and I want to extract the mean monthly values in order to create rasters in ArcGIS. Is it possible in ArcGis or do I have to use another program?
You have probably download the NCEP/NCAR-1 reanalysis. Some program allows us to explore this field: GrADS (the easiest), R (ncdf package and many other), Matlab, Ferret, NCL, IDL, NCO. For ArcGIS, a tutorial is available on the NOAA website (www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/data/gridded/tools.html).
You can, using CDO, also extract the information by levels, if you need that.
To read and manipulate NetCDF I use the python module NETCDF4, it's available on this website as .exe file to intall in ArcGIS 10.0 python folder:

It's not necessary scipy or other modules. With this module you can read NetCDF info, and load data as numpy array.
You can use sellonlatbox and ymonmean (cdo commands) to extract your domain and to have the mean of each month (12 values for your all period).
