The first feed of a developing marine fish larva is almost always phytoplankton, & depending upon the season of breeding, those varieties of phytoplankton which are usually found in the endemic area.At a later stage in development of larva, it takes on zooplankton. Though the majority of% of feed in the latter stage is zooplankton, but also takes in phytoplankton, as & when available or when the former is in short supply.
When it consumes both, naturally it gets nutrients from various sources, bettering its health & growth rate.
Temperate marine fish generally feed initially on copepod nauplii, then larger copepods. When reared in captivity they are fed Artemia nauplii, typically ones that have been gut-packed with HUFAs (Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids) such as Selco. Many fish can make it through on plain Artemia, but they clearly do much better with the supplement as Artemia are not a complete food.
