Nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations in the natural environment vary widely depending on factors like land use, climate, and proximity to anthropogenic sources. Generally, urban river reaches exhibit the highest N2O concentrations, often exceeding those in forested, agricultural, or mixed watersheds. Atmospheric N2O concentrations have increased significantly since the pre-industrial era, primarily due to agriculture, but natural sources also play a role.

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is one of the significant greenhouse gases, although it is often overlooked compared to carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄). Its concentrations in the natural environment are increasing mainly due to intensive agriculture, particularly the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers, as well as the burning of biomass and fossil fuels. While it naturally occurs in smaller amounts through microbial processes in soil and oceans, human activities have led to a substantial rise in its atmospheric levels. I believe that monitoring and controlling N₂O emissions is of critical importance, as this gas has approximately 300 times greater global warming potential per molecule than CO₂ over a 100-year period. Ignoring its impact represents a serious oversight in climate policies, and N₂O should receive more attention both in scientific research and in international strategies to combat climate change.
