I have raised this issue several times in the past and nothing has changed. I submitted all of the name variation used on my articles (surname first; use of initials; sometimes my surname christian and middle names) and received no explanation other than Research Gate attempts to verify all work but has difficulties or words to that affect. I don't understand why there is such a large discrepancy between Google Scholar and Research Gate.
Peter - all 'bibliographic' companies use their own metric-based software. My citation rate varies across a whole raft of databases i.e. Google Scholar, RG, Scopus, ISI, Mendeley, Grow Kudos, ORCID, ResearcherID, Publons etc. No two scores are the same. GoogleScolar is one of the most generous - as it includes a wide range of sources that others do not - such as citation in reports, theses, books etc. RG uses a more conservative metric - more on the lines of Scopus. I have over 4,000 citations in GoogleScholar - yet only just over 2,000 on RG. There is probably little point contacting RG. Unless they change their database parameters - if it isn't in their source list - it will not get acknowledged.
Your citations will be counted by ResearchGate only if he authors of the citing papers have uploaded their full texts to ResearchGate.
Although ResearchGate is popular, you can be sure that some authors do not put their papers here.
Google Scholar, for example, searches the web for the websites of the journals and any publication in which the references are visible gets counted.
You will note that many journals make the reference lists of their papers visible for free, even if you need to pay to see the full text.

The number of citations of a publication listed on Google Scholar is much higher compared to respective figures of citations recorded by the Web of Science or Scopus. Google Scholar adds any citations, including those of non-peer reviewed documents such as conference proceedings, magazines, newspapers etc. While the Web of Science or Scopus indicates citations in relation to the journals listed in these two databases, respectively. Therefore, the number of citations of any article is much higher as per Google Scholar records compared to the other databases.
In the case of ResearchGate, they depend on citations as per Scopus.
