Most research on mixed line rate optical networks restricts the highest rate to 100 Gbps. Is it possible to have a rate much higher than that. Of course non-linear effects have to be minimized as usual. If that can be done, can we achieve a much higher rate.
Hi, the reason why we study mixed line rate systems is mainly to explore ways to efficiently upgrade systems designed for very low bit rates like 10 or 40 Gbps to 100G. It is unlikely that when 400Gbps systems will be commercially available, 10G (assume OOK) wavelengths will be still present for their poor spectral efficiency and the nonlinear distortion they induce on the phase-modulated signals. Said that, it's OK to research any combination of line rates: some of them will be interesting, others not.
I agree. 10Gbps is going to be obsolete. However, if we upgrade to say 400Gbps, I think, 40Gbps or 100 Gbps will intrude with those bit rates as 10 Gbps does now with 100 Gbps. It will interesting to work on combination of rates
The mixed rate optical line systems are designed to support more of commercial applications with different data-rate demands between different terminals. Answer to you question, yes it is possible to achieve more data rate beyond 100 Gbps. That's where the concept of supper channels comes called flexible optical line systems. There you can have your super channel as per your commercial data rate requirement supporting N number of retail customers. I personally suggest if you also demonstrate experimentally that would be great. Plz feel free if you have more questions.
The only hitch, as I see right now, is the accumulation of non-linear effects. In this regard, it will be interesting to see if XPM still is the dominant effect, as it is till 100 Gbps. O-OFDM ofcourse will have a major role to play for very high rates. Thanks for the comments.
