I am also doing physical mycorrhizal quantification by staining, but that need to be supported by gene expression...
May be you can consider to analyze maize sample from different maize growing stages and check the functional role of that particular gene by expression analysis...., also you can consider to analysis the gene abundance or gene copy number in different growing stage....
