The only problem with teaching morals and values in education is making sure that the instructor is not being biased. Also, one must be careful as one does not always know the moral and values of the students parents. Therefore, basis morals and values, such as using manners and learning to get along with others is always a good start. As they progress to higher grades than more complex morals and values could be taught as they are a bit more mature to understand the concepts being taught.

This is a great and complex question. Here’s my contribution.

Taking on Cheryl’s challenge, it’s very hard not being morally biased when teaching; even knowledge is biased (Nelson Goodman’s “Ways of Worldmaking” is a good book on that subject).

For instance,wWestern knowledge, such as all forms of knowledge, is value ladden, although many pedagogues and philosophers don’t acknowledge it. Modernity brought the utopia that knowledge could be separated from its human context, from subjectivity and morality. Schools and universities built entire curricula based on that belief, forgeting the ethical basis of every knowledge. Knowledge is made by humans, to benefit humans, hence, all knowledge has its share of values. So, the act of teaching is a way of diffusing morals (hidden or not).

With this in mind, why should we ignore value education? I think we should assume that values are integral to teaching and teach them, but not as a separate subject. If all knowledge is value-ladden, then value education is transversal to all subjects. That implies that teaching should be done through real life problem solving exercises, for instance. It’s a way for students to confront reality and its intricacies, full of morally challenging situations. It’s a way of putting into action different value schemes, from different people, and looking for a solution that fits with these same varied schemes. To get that, I’m forced to agree with what Cheryl’s written, that a good upbringing is the basis to this — especially one that teaches how to relate to others, one that teaches to listen and talk with manners.

considero que la formación de profesionales debe estar cargada de competencias profesionales, pero todo docente debe tener el nivel de formación integral por ejemplo formar el habito de la lectura, contagiar la pasión de investigar a través de las actividades que permitan que los estudiantes realicen investigadores en los cursos universitarios.

finalmente, los valores no se enseñan se aprenden con el ejemplo la responsabilidad se aprende si los docentes somos responsables podemos exigir ser responsable a nuestros estudiantes.

I too agree with the induction of moral values in our education which is missing nowadays day education system.when I was studying in school, every week one/two hours were allocated for moral values.

Generally speaking, moral values are an indispensable part of different aspects of education such as the curriculum, the academic culture and the behavior of the teachers. Because of their importance, moral values should permeate and underlie all educational dimensions . As such, teachers have a great responsibility in this respect because they are the implementors of educational goals in every society. The question is not whether teachers display values in education, but rather which values they display, and how the teachers work with values in their teaching. Therefore, teacher training programs should be equipped with a strong values component and should provide teaching with an effective moral flavor . Naturally, values can be taught as an independent subject. However, it is generally agreed today that values should be interwoven in regular teaching practices in order to serve as a permanent controlling element dominating the identity development of students.

Yes, I think this should be added to early education. How to act appropriately and how to treat others is just as important(if not more so) as reading, writing and arithmetic!!

Moral values help in making complete human beings not just individuals.The lack of moral value is the major cause of unrest; newspaper headlines on the assault cases and increasing number of old age support home are clearly an indication of wrong in the society. The importance of honesty, hard work, respect for others, co-operation, and forgiveness must be taught from the beginning of life. The educational institutions at all levels(primary, secondary and Tertiary) should organize activities for social causes and motivate students to participate actively.The moral values namely: Honesty, Responsibility, Respect, Compassion have great importance in human life for living peacefully.Not only educational institution but all the stake holders in the society work together to achieve the goal.

Education is obviously more than just teaching and learning, but I thing what you ask about must be implemented in the subjects you teach, and not as a separate subject. Pedagogy is against doing that separately.

Totally in agreement and this should not be limited to school.we go through education from birth to death All educational contents taught to children and adults should emphasize on values and this can be at any stage of the teaching process. It could be implicitly or explicitly expressed in the curriculum. To me education without character or value is just destruction
