I'm working on olive study and I'm using minirhizotron images to estimate root density in soil profile. However, the image analysis software provide an extra data such as, root surface area, root diameter etc..
I wonder if anybody included those set of data (root surface area, root diameter) in his publication before. Actually, I can't find any publication include these data. The only published data that I've found in the literature is the root length density.

Dr. Yahia, I personally feel that both root diameter as well as root surface area are very important criteria in respect of nutrient absorption/adsorption and release. Even these parameters affect with various treatments. Therefore, one should consider these parameters.
Average root diametres tell little, as it depend strongly on the estimate of the very fine roots, where the analysis is often not very good. You can check for differences in root diameter classes, when not considering the lowest diameter classes, this may give some valuable information.
Root surface area is genreally closely related to root length, so there is typically little extra information to be gained for that.
