In some articles, the authors reported that, MIC of antimicrobial agent have an ability to disrupt the bacterial biofilms. How it will happen? In general, biofilms are group of bacteria more strong than single cells. Then how this MIC of antimicrobial agent will work against bacterial biofilms?
In my experience strength of the biofilm is a limiting factor for its inhibition. It depends on many environmental factors, anchorage surface type, assay method etc. But in general MIC concentration may not be sufficient for inhibiting a proper biofilm.
Biofilm formation determined by several parameters. It is important to use known standard culture for biofilms quantification before assessing the MICs.

The compounds may have inhibited biofilm formation through the modulation of quorum sensing - the bacterial communication involved in the regulation of transcription of genes encoding for mechanisms leading to biofilm formation. QSI works on a mechanism different from antibacterial activities. Hence, sub-MICs of compounds may cause the disruption of biofilm formation without the inhibition of cell growth.
