Many people ask me about this version skipping. Has Version 9 been thrown into the bin because of major problems? Does Microsoft want to leave Windows 8 behind as fast as possible?
My tentative explanation is that Windows 9 could easily be mixed up in the future with Windows 95 and Windows 98.
Any further ideas here are well appreciated.

Your assumptions about Windows 9 and Windows 95 and Windows 98 is quite possible! Often Miscrosoft dosen't not follow the numeration!
I agree with you, and perhaps 10 is a number with more importance than 9 for many people. If you say 9, one second after you, one other say 10! So 9 could be an unstable version...

Some say they wanted to make it easier for seaching for the new version as they already had 95 and 98 versions, which also started with a 9.

Microsoft execs have promised to reveal the consumer-oriented version of Windows 10, which will run on smartphones and tablets, sometime early next year. They've been tightlipped on other details, however, such as what month the consumer version might appear and what kind of devices it will support.
This month, Microsoft COO Kevin Turner offered the slightest of updates, stating at a conference that company execs will discuss the "end-user consumer experience in early spring"; provide more information for developers by early summer; and by "late summer and early fall," release the final versions. @Mariano, here in Thailand the number '9' is deemed as lucky. Many people here think that there will be no accident with their cars if their license plate number contains a '9' and drive accordingly careless. So, Microsoft execs do not accept this as true, obviously.
It's a marketing trick, since 10 is a more glorious number, sometimes is synonym with the excellent grade in many ranking schemas.
If Microsoft is about to launch windows 10, then I hope that other versions, such as windows 7, become 100% free to download & work with. This is good for many poor persons who cannot purchase the genuine CD of that window & will cause many persons to leave all the old versions of windows XP.
I am agree with @Demetris and should say it may exaggerate its different with windows 8 by skipping one step. so try to convenience customers to buy that.
They should catch up lost time and reach Mac OS X v10.0 possibilities.
