I am interested in measurement of surface 15 cm with a CPN503 gauge, but there is a problem. Is anyone using some type of material at the the surface to stop the loss of neutrons to air and keep counts accurate?
A friend of mine prof. Kouman Koumanov uses this method for establishment of soil moisture. You can write and ask him on this address: [email protected] or [email protected]
To resolve this problem I have used a method whose details are in the publication attached, obtaining good results. This article is written in spanish but if you wish I can translate the paragraph of your interest.
Certainly you can make important errors (20% or more) if a single equation is used as estimator. The key question is to carry out independent calibrations for superficial layers.
I recently used this method to asses the effect of a plastic cover over the soil moisture and their evolution, (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/sum.12000/abstract), but the details of measures of soil moisture content in superficial layers are given in this attachment.
