I am trying to synthesis Bi-based MOF. The starting materials are bismuth nitrate pentahydrate, trimesic acid, and benzylimidazole. Currently, the ratio that I have calculated is 1:3:1 rspectively. Is it right to distribute that way? Or is the ratio between bismuth nitrate, trimesic acid and benzylimidazole should be 3:1:1 respectively?
You should find a similar article and match your ratios accordingly.
And if you are trying to make a new synthesis, you should try different proportions
Hello Muhammad, Thank you for your question. I am not an expert in the field of MOFs myself, but I remember that the metallic nodes are single atoms as well as small clusters of several metal atoms. For this reason, Mahdie Saghian 's suggestion to try different stoichiometries is a good one, especially when synthesizing new MOFs.

many thanks for posting this very interestig technical question on RG. I also agree with Mahdie in that you should try a small series of experiments in which you employ different stoichiometric ratios (in case that you intend to prepare a new MOF). Trimesic acid can form a salt with bismuth(III) in a ratio of 1:1. However, salt formation between your benzylimidazole is also possible. There is a fairly large body of literature about bismuth-based MOFs available. For example, the following interesting reference is a review article about this area:
