Dear All, have you seen such objects? I have a complex of them (I think that already over a dozen) in the separated part of the Paliwodzizna 29 Mesolithic site. They are constructed from the small stones and mostly look like zones of pavement (diameter below a meter) (fot. 1). In some cases below this level (which is as it seems a destroyed part of some construction) there are circles made from stones (diameter of about 50 cm max) with the empty area inside (fot. 2). Sometimes I have only this parts preserved. They look like originally underground part of the features. The layers around contains a lot of charcoals. Some stone from the constructions are also burned out. According to the opinion of the geomorphologist and the soil scientist these object can not be of a natural origin. I think I can agree with this because there is a lot of Mesolithic artefacts between and udder of them (also between the stones creating the constructions itself). We have also some unusual artefacts as for example pieces of pyrites and stones covered with tarry substance (first EDX analysis showed it consist mainly of carbon). What is important a sample of a charred wood found between the stones of one construction received an early Boreal 14C date. The preservation conditions on the site are extremely well as it seems.

I think it might be remains of the birch-tar kilns of the type I’ve tested some time ago (Osipowicz 2005, Method of birch tar ....), what would be something really interesting but I can be wrong. Do You have any ideas? All of them will be precious .... I’m on excavations so please forgive me if I will answer with a delay.

With my best regards
