What would be a suitable mesh element to be used for surface to surface contact in Abaqus for structural simulations with nonlinear material properties? I am currently using :
linear hexahedral elements of type C3D8R
linear wedge elements of type C3D6
Can somebody share some experiences in this area?

In principle, any abaqus element can be used in contact problems. Second-order elements are sometimes problematic in node-to-surface-contact, but AFAIK in surface-to-surface contact, they usually work well.
Without knowing anything about your problem, there is no way to give a more specific anser.
I am modelling a masonry shell over an arch (both solid elements). So it is brittle material (modelled with a plastic damage model). the contact area is around 0.25 m2. the contact surface includes 5 - 10 elements
