Media not solidifying?

Usually during preparation of some media like nitrate medium or nitrite medium where sucrose or ferrous sulphate are one of the medium components I have observed that post autoclaving the media does not solidify properly. I usually add some extra agar to aid in its solidifying. what might be the reasons. Does ferrous sulphate as a component produce any exothermic reaction which prevents the media from solidifying?

Actually when pure salt of ferrous sulfate is dissolved in water the reaction is endothermic...the test tube becomes cool..
