What is the best media for Diamond Anvil Cell for experiment with pressure higher then 12GPa? Methanol-ethanol mixture has a hydrostatic limit near 10.5GPa. Is it possible to load ultra high pressure media without special equipment?
Methanol-ethanol-water in 16:3:1 proportion has been shown to be quasi-hydrostatic till 15 GPa. Otherwise you will have to resort to liquid gases as He, Ne, Ar, N2, being He the best of them and providing quasi-hydrostatic behaviour above 30 GPa.
Thanks for answer. Can you recommend some articles about this? Especially I'm interesting described in the articles technique to load liquid gases in to DAC.
Hello Alexander, this article describes a the latest system developed, as far as I know: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08957950802333593. Ar can be cryogenically loaded in a much simpler system, but is not a really good medium.
To Francisco Javier Manjon. In article http://stacks.iop.org/JPhysD/42/075413 author show that 13:3:1 methanol-ethanol-water has a hydrostatic limit 10.5+-0.5GPa. So the best media is liquid He, but i unfortunately i can't find article which describe such technique to load DAC with them.
Alternatively you can heat your DAC as you increase the pressure. This will melt the glassy phase of the meth-eth mixture at high pressures, and will improve hydrostaticity considerably. Once you have changed pressure, you can return to room temperature.
