The material can then be deformed at the same strain rate by a lower applied stress, the lower yield point. During this period of plastic deformation the sample exhibits a region of stable local deformation that increases in size as the deformation continues. This region in the polycrystalline sample is known as a Luders band.

I think the wording in wikipedia seems a bit wrong as it makes it quite apparent that Lüder bands and slip bands are the same thing which is not true. Slip bands occur in all metallic crystalline alloys during the plastic deformation stage. Yet Lüder bands do not occur in all metals. In modern alloys it is less frequent to observe Lüdering. Also slip bands form within individual grains at the microscale whilst Lüdering is a more macroscopic phenomenon. Whilst Lüdering can be distinguished at the macroscale by observing the stress strain curve, slip banding is not distinguishable.
