We sectioned the fractured area micro structure found to be 90% ferrite structure 10% pearlite
What could be the cause for rupture ?
Nothing unusual (for low carbon steel) is visible on your picture.
For determination of cause of fracture I would start with fractography, i.e. study of fracture surface, preferably utilizing SEM and EDS.
The microstructure provided here does not help much. Did the fracture occur by a single crack? Could you observe any secondary cracks, reduction in wall thickness of the duct near the fracture, thicker oxide scale or (hot) corrosion products such as iron sulfate? More data are needed to tell a story! Possible failure mechanism could be thermal fatigue, creep-fatigue interaction, creep-corrosion interaction, or a simple blue-brittleness. The microstructure shown here does not point out any of these.
