Hi everyone. We have a musical instrument, that is Constantly being played under sequential impacts in fast pace (similar to dulcimer).
To achieve a softer sound, it's common to add a small piece of felt fabric to the head of this instrument. The problem here is that after a time period, this fabric tends to smash and it's thickness decreases, which causes the softness of final sound to decrease. Now we are looking for a new material to avoid this problem.
It is preferred for that to be in texture form, but there is no necessity.

Would a sheet from natural or synthetic rubber work?
The rubber can be made impact resistant (with low compression set), but I'm not sure about a sound

About the sound: Probably Rubber wouldn't produce a nice and pleasant sound, although it is worth trying.
You can try low cost Al-metal foam. Also, Irrespective of temperature better choice is 3D graphing,.
How about leather? I know this is used in bell clappers to 'soften' the sound.
