Hi everyone,
I have a linear mixed effect model where my X variable is Shannon Diversity and I have two fixed effects, Corn genotypes (5 level) and time (2 levels), and one random variable, Block (4 levels).
So that my model looks like this:

I assume you should treat it as a fixed effect (i.e., fixed factor).

Is it a problem that time cannot be normally distributed (for one there are only positive values). Events in time accumulate as a Poisson process: the variance grows larger as the mean time grows larger.

I tried what you said but the distribution of the residuals still seems to be a problem. I have attached the plot of the residuals here when I include varIdent (note, I also tried varPower).This is the model that I ran:
