I am currently carrying out an LCA analysis of our gasifier that co produces biochar and syngas. Is the avoided burden method the best method in order to take into account the two different products and the added value of producing a natural gas substitute? So, should i calculate the impact of e.g. heat or power generated by conventional fuels and subtract it form the impact of the biochar system? I am using Simapro
Hi Lydia I think I have Product Category Rules for biochar LCA developed by an asian company. In these you can find discussed all the methodological choices to implement a study on biochar. I send them privately. Hoping that they will help you.
The answer to your question about the 'avoided' burden depends on the type of your study: is it a standalone study, an evaluation of continuing with an existing situation or replacing it with another (analytical analogy: investment calculus), or is a comparison of systems off the shelf (like in a shop, analytical analogy: accounting)? The product category rules are suitable for the latter; the avoided emissions (or expanded system) is better with the middle option.
I also suggest you look into other LCA studies of biochar for inspiration and comparison, esp for purpose of study and related methodological choices. A quick search in google scholar showed there are several biochar LCA studies available.
