We are working on a project looking at linguistic expressions of empathy (e.g., I'm sorry you are struggling with that issue) by students of different ethnic groups. Does anyone know of research that looks at expressions of empathy across groups? Here is a fabricated example, African American female medical students use more explicit empathy statements than other students.

I am not from the linguistic field but I personally love this environment. As far as I am aware, there is an Instagram account (@greengodictionary) for mostly Brazilian expressions. You could basically have a look in there and potentially use in your research.

Language and empathy towards many groups and communities are very prominent in many parts of the world, especially in Developing Countries.
Women as a community are always treated as a weaker sex and both family and community behavior towards them is mostly with sympathy and empathy, because they are girls/women.
Every alternate day, they are treated as objects, never as human beings.
Discrimination on gender from birth till death, childhood upbringing, education, heath care, both domestic and community violence, widowhood, and many more are areas where women are treated with empathy and sympathy both in language and behavior.

Language of empathy, as well as language of emotions in general, certainly varies under different cultural and social rules toward verbal emotion expression.

Moreover, there are always two sides, one who express empathy, and one who percieve it. Just look at this fabricated example: African American female medical students are percieved to use more explicit empathy statements than other students. Is it a bit different then the first one?
I suggest it's better to focuse research attention on both sides of communication.
