Don't publish with these people. It is a predatory publisher. They ask for money to republish your PhD/masters but will not distribute it. They're model is only about getting the fee from authors. Publishing with them is a negative on your CV, and a publication with them is less serious than a straight PhD thesis.
See Ken Friedman's posts to PhD-Design e.g. https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind1702&L=PHD-DESIGN&P=R194105&1=PHD-DESIGN&9=A&J=on&d=No+Match%3BMatch%3BMatches&z=4
having looked back over ken's post, it may not be an author charge, but they take copyright transfer and do print on demand with no marketing, so i guess they make money from a handful of people buying it...
Here's a couple of bits from Ken's post:
Lambert Academic Publishing and Verlag Dr Mueller prey on PhD students, as well as on recent bachelor’s and master’s graduates. They run a massive business that purports to publish thesis projects in a print-on-demand format while encumbering copyright. LAP and VDM even publish reprint versions of Wikipedia content for sale through Amazon and others — it’s free on Wikipedia, but LAP and VDM sell the same content at a price. While these firms sometimes publish reprints of useful material with lapsed copyright protection, this is only a small part of their business. Finding valid content in the flood of these publications is like mining for diamonds in a river basin. While you may occasionally find a gem, you must sift through tons of muck to do so. LAP and VDM publish PhD theses under circumstances adverse to the authors. The business model is so troubling that it is nearly fraudulent. These firms trawl the web sites of universities looking for thesis projects by recent graduates — bachelor’s theses, master’s theses and doctoral theses are all the same to LAP and VDM. They send enthusiastic invitations to every graduate offering to publish a book, sight unseen. They also offer to publish conference papers, articles, and reports in monographic form. LAP and VDM have several imprints. None of these imprints offer impact or visibility to the authors.
Well, seems they do not really distribute. They actually say, they do not take copy right. But as the mail explains, no other publisher will be any longer interested to publish the work. In addition, it lowers ones reputation to publish with no regular publishing process.
The moment I graduated, I received a mail from Lambert. They wanted to publish my Thesis. On the first look, they appeared lucrative, as they were bringing my work to the public domain with an 'academic' packaging. However with a critical eye, one could read between the lines in their offer and publishing model. Moreover, I had a sense that it takes a mile to publish a book and in their model, I could not see a transparent and comprehensive review process, but desperation to sell my work.
A few years later (in 2016) on a Design Mailing List (JISCmail PhD Design)
Prof. Ken Friedman has elaborated on the misdeeds of prey publishers like Lambert for very long. He argues, "Lambert Academic Publishing, Verlag Dr. Mueller, and the cluster of publishing ventures around them write to young and inexperienced scholars. Queries from colleagues indicate that LambertAcademic Publishing (LAP) and Verlag Dr Mueller (VDM) once again seek articles and small monographs. As always, they contact recent PhD graduates with offers to publish theses in book form... Lambert Academic Publishing and Verlag Dr Mueller prey on PhD students, as well as on recent bachelor’s and master’s graduates. They run a massive business that purports to publish thesis projects in a print-on-demand format while encumbering copyright... They are not respected, but they are commercial publishers. This leads to the second problem. Publishing a title with a commercial press renders the text unpublishable by journals or by other publishers. Publishing with LAP and VDM makes it impossible to publish material in other forms. In addition, LAP and VDM hold sufficient copyright control to raise problems for other use."
Another point he mentions is, "If you enter Lambert Academic Publishing and Verlag Dr. Mueller in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers, you will find that neither is acceptable at either level 1 or level 2. LAP and VDM do not count among the world's 3,033 recognised publishers."
