I want to test a particular theory in a particular cultural context using qualitative methodology. Although I will be using the deductive approach with a priori coding based on the theory I have a doubt -

My research objective aligns with the deductive analytic strategy, however, I do not want to ignore additional themes as they might prove to be useful for refining/expanding the theory.

Additionally I will be reporting the negative cases (which is characteristic of the deductive approach) and deviant cases (if any).

If I decide to come up with additional codes and coding categories inductively and report them - then should I be calling it a hybrid approach?

Additional codes meaning:

- Codes that do not fit into the pre-developed codebook but fit into the theoretical framework broadly

I want to be clear about the analytic approach before beginning. I do not yet know if I will have additional codes or categories.

Thanking everyone in advance.

Warm regards,

Shilpa.
