On a more theoretical level, Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) makes clear how feedback is part of a closed unidirectional causal chain (loop), relating a system and its environment.  According to PCT, feedback is necessary if error signals that occur due to differences between one's perceptions and references (such as goals/objectives) are to be effectively reduced.

A basic reference to PCT is William T. Powers, Behavior: The Control of Perception (2005/1973) and informative websites are http://www.livingcontrolsystems.com and http://perceptualcontroltheory.org

I would argue that all infant learning implicitly incorporates motivated feedback-seeking behaviour, and that no theory of self-initiated and self-regulated learning, whether infant-focused or adult-focused, is of any import whatsoever without reference to such behaviour, its relevance to the learning-process and the individual, and its underpinning mental operations and neural mechanisms. The success of actions intended to a attain behavioral goals cannot be evaluated without perceptual feedback, and indeed perceptual feedback in the context of exploratory actions is essential for initially specifying that some acted-upon feature in the environment constitutes a goal that's both worth pursuing and potentially attainable.

I would unreservedly endorse Richard Pfau's referring you to PCT, which, to my knowledge, is the best available explanatory model we have in this area. Its groundedness in basic cybernetic principles is key to its potency and comprehensive scope. To the two PCT websites he's listed, I'll add http://www.pctweb.org/ - it has loads of links that may prove relevant in some way.

A cornerstone in the relevant literature is Carver and Scheier (2001) - here's a link fo preview the book on Amazon dot com.

I might add one very recent one of my own that qualifies where negative feedback control has been described accurately, and where, despite the apparent gravitas of the authors, it has been described inaccurately or in a way that does not allow functional models to be built.
