of course, bamboo doesn't naturally occur in Europe. However, it is in principle possible to grow it here - depending on local climatic etc. conditions (I presume you are referring to outdoor cultivation, right?). I haven't grown bamboo myself, but I know of a few locations in western/central Europe where it is grown outdoors (for aesthetic/showcasing purposes). Are you looking for opportunities for large-scale, commercial growth of bamboo in Europe?
Exactly, I am looking for opportunities for large-scale, commercial growth of bamboo in Europe. More specifically, i am looking for bamboo species that have already proven themselves in europe and the corresponding characteristics and data (growth rate, water consumption, pest susceptibility, cultivation area, location...).
Do you have any information or tips on where I can find this ?
in terms of biogeographic considerations (including climatic conditions), the tribe Arundinarieae might lend itself best to potential cultivation in Europe. There are quite a number of genera within this tribe, some of which are found in the Himalayas, which you might wish to check out. Arundinaria spec. (endemic to eastern North America [just three species, I think]) might also be worth to have a look at for your purposes. Note that such "canes" were widely used by pre-Columbian indigenous communities in what is today the southeastern US.
