is there any way to calculate the change in surface area of the nanofiber after coating/functionalization theoretically assuming that we have the specific surface area of pristine nanofibers reported from the literature?
I am not entirely sure if that's even possible for actual surface area.
There are several reasons for that:
1) The coating could induce porosity on the surface which are hard to image (micropores especially). Furthermore, they could be interconnected below the surface, which makes it even more difficult.
2) The coating itself could be non-uniform and vary from fiber to fiber. Trying to approximate this to a 'regular geometry' could introduce major errors in your calculation.
The geometrical surface area would still be possible if you have the average dimensions for the particles. All you need to accomplish that is a good imaging technique of your choice.
Though it would be nice to know if there is already an established technique for this.
