Educating the citizens and setting policies to reduce the population geowth expected in next decades

Achieve replacement level fertility

Reducing population growth can help hold down food demand. While most regions are projected to reach replacement level fertility — or the rate at which a population exactly replaces itself from one generation to the next — sub-Saharan Africa's population is on course to more than double between now and 2050.

Reduce food loss and waste

So much food is wasted every day, if we can just work on public education, we may able to save some and send it to poor countries

Boost crop yields

Boosting yields is particularly important in sub-Saharan Africa, which currently has the world's lowest cereal yields but will account for one-third of all additional calories needed in 2050.

Improve land and water management

Conservation agriculture — such as reduced tillage, crop rotations and mulching — increased maize yields in Malawi. Combining these techniques with agroforestry — intercropping with trees — further increased yields. These practices could be scaled up on more than 300 million hectares in sub-Saharan Africa.

I believe a major cause of food crisis is the lack of  "Food Accessibility" not the "Food Availability". Improving economic, social and physical accessibility of food  to the poors and deprived (i.e. equitable distribution of food) would therefore be a major challenge towards ensuring global food security in time to come. And this is not to undermine the importance of increasing food production which is so very essential to meet the food requirement of the world's ever-expanding population.

Behrouz is right. The most important thing is to decrease the population growth of H. sapiens. This is not a scientific problem. The second item is decreasing significantly the waste and lavishing of food and feed. I stress the number of pets is horrible and these animals consume to much feed. The quantity of food of animal (mammal) origin should be decreased because the very little efficiency of their production. One should be familiarised with the idea that insects are excellent protein sources and their production is easy, cheap and sustainable using a suitable technology. The production of some algae (e.g. Scenedesmus spp.) as food and feed can be also an option.

May be thinking about vertical farming is an innovative solution to food shortages

A company called Plantagon hopes to build a 12-storey, triangular food facility. Once built, the farm will be the tallest of its kind in the world, and will use innovative ways to generate extra revenue. In addition to selling its food.

This building will be quite a feat of engineering. It will feature a mechanical track, enclosed in its own layer of glass, which will carry growing plants from the top of the building to the bottom. This unique design exposes the plants to an even amount of sunlight and allows to perform planting and harvesting. The company plans to produce 300 to 500 metric tons of leafy greens per year.

If I remember well during a time or at a place I did not experience myself, governments distributed food tickets (e.g. like money only to be used to buy food) to regulate and control food consumption at the population level.  In a free-marked system this will not be possible accepting that many people would not have a mental state towards sacrifice and compassion.

I also think that, as mentioned above, food transport from food-rich to food-poor regions is quite expensive from an energetic point of view. How food-poor regions, like the Sahara, be transformed into a large food-rich region? Any technical solutions?

I also think that increase of food production in food-poor regions might result in an increase in the local population size in response to the increased food availability. Do people think about the long-term consequences of their individual decisions?

The World Food Bank's food price index increased by 15 percent between October 2010 and January 2011. According to World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick, "The price hike is already pushing millions of people into poverty, and putting stress on the most vulnerable, who spend more than half their income on food."

Lets avoid some practices that enlarge poverty. For example they say that GM foods will solve the food crisis. It is better to avoid GM techniques. The real objective of GM food is profit not reducing poverty. Avoid   "traditional development" since the capital invest mainly for profit, and when they are leaving they leave behind poverty, unemployment etc. It would be better to develop local activities to reduce food-shortage. The solution should be find in anti-global local activities.

Excellent answers all, and my indebtedness is beyond words! To sum up, possible solutions for food shortage include (but by no means are limited to) reducing food loss and waste, boosting crop yields, improving land and water management, avoiding practices that lead to further poverty, decreasing the lavishing of food, reducing the number of pets and animals that consume a lot of food, reducing human waste, increasing the religious awareness of the need to eat but little and save food for the needy people.

In conclusion, dear Miranda, my question is, I hope, a new look at an old subject! But thanks again for sharing your thread!

Science and technology can  contribute something to this greatest of all dilemmas. The ideal answer would be for the wealthier countries to share their food and water supplies with the poorer countries. However, selfishness (the original sin) will interfere with this ideal. I fear there is no viable answer given the selfish nature of human beings and other living species.

Thanks! Give me one reason that would make our modern common humanity happy, given all we see and have around us!

To feed 3 billion people in the next 50 years is challenging,however, if we use our science and technology in appropriate way and stop misusing resources, it will be possible. Another thought is that "The world has enough to feed everybody but really not enough to meet the greed of even a single person". Therefore, political systems also play important role to address such issues. We have to decide whether we want some greedy persons or everybody to survive.

In my opinion (which was formed when I taught a course "Chemistry & Society" for  many years through which I followed this subject by consulting many references), the world’s food production/industry suffice to feed a larger number than the present world's population. We already have chemical fertilizers that have increased productivity of a land area many folds, we have desalination of sea water which gives drinkable water & water for irrigation, we have conversion of waste household water into usable water for plantation, and we have manipulations of  synthetic enzymes to enhance faster & increasing production of crops. The problem lies in the distribution of food: in some countries, mountains of fruits & vegetables are destroyed and in some countries , heaps of wheat & grain are burnt or thrown into the sea. Had these wasted types of food been sent to the needy, we would have never heard of starvation or malnutrition in some parts of the world, at all.

I quite agree with all the comments raised so far, particularly in the contexts of reduction in the global food waste, sustainable agricultural practices along the entire food to fork value chain and sustainable consumption. making the arid and dry regions more productive would also add to producing more food. but more importantly, we need to endure that the entire farm to fork value chain activities are made sustainable.

The basic problem of  food resources distribution in the world is a political problem, many countries destroy the excess of their production when others suffer from famine!! it is also ugly that in the same country people do the same when their citizens or neighbors ask for eating !!

I do not think there is eminent crisis of food shortage or food crisis even in near future. All is due to speculation and ups and downs in International market. In sixties when Asia and Africa was starving, American their excess food production were dumping in the Pacific so that food prices are not destablised.

There are many different answers to this issue. Each answer depends on the country. In USA and most 1st world order countries we waste food, throw it away, use it for non-feeding purposes. The waste is unreal.

However the answer is not giving it away. We have learned that with free-give-aways the receiver becomes entitled and does not learn to work for their own needs. Yes, today that would seem untrue but in 5 years of receiving free give-away people believe they are entitled to it and lose the desire to self-excel.

Today the path into starving, poor areas of the world is being paved by GMO companies. It is a double horror; toxic foods, toxic chemicals. But these companies have billions of USD $$$ to spend addicting the farmers to growing with chemicals. They bribe governments, buy politicians, even have bought the US federal and state governments. It is corrupt capitalism at its deadly worst.

The answers lay with the people of each country. It takes courage and bravery to stand up and say "No More!" It takes sacrifice and lives to make a change when your government is ruled by tyrants and dictators. When a people cower and whimper and hide from the truth, that sacrifice makes change, then they are victims and they get what victims get: starvation, poverty, hunger and death.

There is virtually no country in the world that does not have the ability, the resources, to make enough food to feed their own. It is their own governments that cripple them, steal their wealth, their resources and put the money that would build better roads, better utilities, better fertilizer & seed supply lines...it is those monsters who create the death and destruction of their own people for the riches of a few.

That is the real answer. Few have the courage to ask it.

But wait! Ghandi lived AFTER 3,000 years of wars and tyranny and abuse and after, after, the British established a single central government in all of India  There has been no single central government (before the British) in India since Ashoka.

The concentration of wealth builts the landscape of hunger that is present in many countries worldwide.

For attaining the food security for the expected 9.6 billion people in 2050 we should develop strategies which promote sustainable use of natural resources. The foresaid sustainability is achieved when present activities are carried out in a manner that does not degrade the quality of land, water, and other resources for its future uses. In my viewpoint this can be achieved by developing strategies which utilizes these resources judiciously in a policy framework in such a way that it achieves long-term social goals rather than short-term economic goals. The latter may be as short as one season, while the former may be as long as generation(s). The simulation and optimization techniques and policy analysis could be used for this purpose.

The future of feeding the world today looks to be in the hands of the GMO chemical companies.

If there is a way to unite the world against them then it needs to be developed. It will not be easy....these corporations are evil people who will stop at nothing to make more and more money.

Their path is easy because they lie, bribe, cheat and destroy anyone in their path.

Their path is easy because there are many many starving people who will grasp at any solution to feed themselves and their children. While we slept; they planned, plotted and sprung into action..... buying governments, (like USA), buying media, buying small, greedy people along every step until they have today an army of small greedy people who feed at the rough of misery and cancer of the world.

To stop them we need to unite the free people. We must unite resources.

But the cost will be great.  And in some countries, like Africa and South America, it will take the people rising up and throwing out their corrupt government and the evil corporation people with them.

That is reality.  Words will do little to stop starvation because many tyrants and dictators keep their people weak and starving so they cannot revolt against them.  The GMO people now bribe many more government people but the effect on the simple people is the same: death and misery.

I am not sure the future. Today I think it would take the collapse of all that is in place in the whole world to make a new path.

Or maybe it takes one big country that has resisted the evils of the people of these monster corporations to decide to make a new path. Now that I have thought this I will start to work on how this can be accomplished.

I hate no man woman or child. I would help all men, women & children of the world.

I am angry with every man, woman & child who rationalizes and justifies hurting, poisoning, causing the death of others for profit...money.

I lived "happiness inside" of me for 30 years....and it did nothing but allowed evil people the freedom to run wild with no one watching.

I believed, with all I am, that just doing the best I could and being truthful and hard working was all that was necessary to help the world be a better place.

That was naive and ignorant. Because while we were honest and hard working ....evil corporations of lying, thieving, cancer-causing people were spreading poison around the globe without any opposition.

Every day tens of thousands of people die of breast cancer, prostate cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer and more....and it was done to them by other people.

Yes, options must be in place for success. However, with GMO and chemicals, the option is NOT to use them. There need be nothing else except TO STOP.

That is but the implementation of human choice...it does not require new systems or even sustainability: it is a choice a human would make to stop using chemicals and franken-seeds.

However; I agree that we must get to those growers, those farmers and educate them on the truth.

Yet when those we know have tried this they were turned away by dictator thugs and tyrant gangs who are receiving pay-offs from GMO mega-corporates. Made to go back and not allowed to work with growers.

Bill & Linda Gates Foundation working in Africa pays many country officials. They are spreading the gospel of GMO deliverance to the farmers in Africa who do not know what these poisons will create.  Gates seem altruistic when they talk about vaccines and medicine, but they are openly dedicated and advancing the use of GMOs because GMOs contribute to their funding.

So: vaccines and medicine to make life better for the poor and developing.....but it comes with chemicals and franken-foods that CREATE more diseases and suffering!

This is a struggle with few options.

Tonight I watch  on TV the documentary "Let's make money". I suggests it to all of you to see how the "development" produces more poverty for the people and more money for the rich!

Yes there is and that is " design of an innovative direct dynamic supply chain from producer to consumer". 

There is a need of producing more food with less available land and water resources. Optimizing the use of continuously shrinking resources could be the right answer.

Only new technologies, including GMOs can save the planet from food hunger.

But, in my opinion, the problem of drinking water is even more acute.

Overproduction and waste is, in and of itself, another crucial problem--dear Francesca!

Friends, I agree with @Anatoliy Goncharuk that the 'problem of drinking water is even more acute'.  Just a few figures:

'More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes. Nearly all deaths, 99 percent, occur in the developing world.  

Of the 60 million people added to the world's towns and cities every year, most move to informal settlements (i.e. slums) with no sanitation facilities.

780 million people lack access to an improved water source; approximately one in nine people.'

(For many years, my country 'shared/sold' our water with Singapore, for a low payment.  But now, Singapore is self sufficient in water.  This is the good news.  How can other countries share water?  No water means no life support.)

Dear Francesca, GM crops cannot save or prevent wastage or greediness.  Those human faults are due to wrong attitudes, and some poor planning.  To prevent waste of food, I need to buy in smaller quantity, and make more trips to the wet market.  And, my normal practice is to cook the leafy vegetables that don't last so well, before the legumes like french beans, and then the vegetables that last well like turnips, pumpkin.  I make it a point to eat more fruits and vegetables (mostly a vegetarian diet) with some fish.  (It's healthier for me to practice this diet, and it's also more efficient because only 10% of the energy can be passed to the next trophic level.)

Producing more foods is not enough to feed the burgeoning world population. But its processing, transportation, storage, and distribution are even more important because about 25-40% food grains is lost in these activities after its harvest.

In the next world there will be population increase. Food crisis is the resukt of human habbits. Those who are having sufficiuaent food they  waste it, mal distribution. Say, all the people should go for croping for his own stomach. As i understand out 100 people in the world 80 numbers are engaed in services or depend on 10% of producer. Can the 80% not feel voluntarily for food production, as like as we are concerning on environmentalism. Some level consciousness has come on environmentalism. We can integrate the efforts of environmentalism with the food security. Only human being need some consciousness. If every human being become food conscious, environment and earth climate restoration will be automatic. Human being would not enjoy destroying the earth when food crisis suffers more. I believe that once the limit of endurance is met, the people will demand change. If change does not come: they will make change.

If we  can just reduce the food waste in production,processing, distribution,restaurants, domestic,....

A report released this week by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Waste Not, Want Not has found that as much as half of all food produced in the world is never eaten, but thrown away.

This is a shocking statistic, particularly in light of the fact that there are 925 million people still hungry in the world. Globally, we produce around four billion tonnes of food per year, but half of this is discarded.

Food waste source reduction or prevention is the strategy of preventing food waste before it is created. An example of food waste prevention for a buffet is tracking which dishes generally have more leftovers, and either make less of the dish or substitute it with a more popular dish, rather than continuing to throw the leftovers away.

Yes Francesca: But here we are none-the-less.

People starving, toxic pollution; it seems that this is the path mankind took regardless of right or wrong. It is where we are today.

For change: either the universe makes change without our input, we make change or no change occurs.

For me: change is action; we need action.

We have plenty of BAD actions: greed, fraud, GMOs, toxic chemicals in our food and water, starvation: all actions by man.

We need more good action; no praying, no begging, no hand-wringing: Action.

First political action and if nothing happens, then action of change.

Then and only then will the poor and starving be fed.
