I know there are a no. of instruments that can be used to find out the surface profile and roughness. e.g. OM, SEM, AFM, etc. But my question is: suppose I have done deform simulation in Ansys/Deform 3D (or any FEM software), I will have a deformed CAD model. So, If I want to find out the surface roughness of that CAD model, what are the possible way to find it out?
I suppose that you can select the nodes of the deformed surface, export the coordinates using a reference coordinate system and then use a mathematics software to calculate roughness parameters.

Working in a CAD, I think that you can intersect the deformed surface with a plane, in the direction that you need to know the roughness. Then you have a line that represent the roughness perfile. By last, apply the methods include in the standards listed by Carlos Llerena.

The Keyence VK-X250K is a laser scanning microscope that is capable of providing surface roughness measurements to an extremely high degree of accuracy.

I think best way to measure this possible in additive manufacturing (AM) cases because AM is related with rapid prototype and without CAD data cannot be simulated even cannot be slice made. The design of virtual CAD models that contain a realistic and better expectation of the anticipated defects or deviations prior to the AM process, assisting in the design validation process and cost-effectively assessing different printing parameters, strategies, surface treatments and behavior of AM parts.
It is possible to design surface roughness on CAD models using areal surface roughness parameters in such a way as to replicate the surface that is produced during Powder Bed Fusion (AM process). In order to design surface roughness on CAD models of lattice structures by two ways one to extract surface roughness from an AM lattice using X-ray Computed Tomography and another one to design a different upper and down skin surface roughness on a strut-based lattice.
