I am looking for recent papers (last 10 years) or studies which have employed multivariate statistics to investigate and quantify variation in (apparently) uniform geological stratigraphies. These could be mudstones, limestones, etc., or lava stacks, ash layers etc., and employ geochemical, colour or grain size variables.
Any suggestions or ideas gratefully received.
There are many. Use of Multivariate Discrimination of geological populations had commenced significantly with the study of Roser and Korsch (1988), Ferrell et.al. 1998, etc. Recent ones include Ramkumar (2000, 2001, 2004 grainsize) Ramkumar (2004 - modal composition) Ramkumar et.al. (2010, 2011 -geochemistry). These are available in researchgate as well
Also Vermeesch 2013 uses multidimensional scaling which may be useful for you.
