A reaction-diffusion system (RDS) is a variant of so called singularly perturbed systems. And all RDS belong to parabolic partial differential equation. The essential idea is that one part of such a system is its slow part, whereas the other part is fast. Hence:

1) every RDS belong to PDE, but the converse is not true;

2) every RDS belong to parabolic partial differential equation, but the converse is not true;

3) every RDS must be a variant of singularly perturbed systems (because the converse case is not interesting).

And, in my humble opinion, it is doubtful that some reaction-diffusion system or some PDE model in general can be helpful for understanding brain cell dynamics.
