I am working on some commercial protease enzymes to enhance their activity by different chemical agents. I found some metal ions have the ability to enhance the proteolytic activity up to 20 to 30% and I have enough experimental data for it (spectrophotometric assay). Now how will I explain the experimental data? I mean is there any change in the active site or its specificity.
Not my field but you may find that the catalytic centre contains a metal ion and that you have added that on, or one that either complements or spares it. These are testable hypotheses in clean systems.

as far as I know, inorganic and organic catalysts (enzymes) are involved in electron transfer processes. They are needed to facilitate this process in one way or another. Metal ions can affect this process in different ways. Ion can play a role of temporary electron storage, or it can contribute to the polarization of its environment, thereby facilitating the transfer of an electron from its neighbors.
First of all, it should be noted which ions do it well, which do it poorly, and which do not. And then think about why they behave the way they do.
