Is there any information on how the fluorophore of GFP is degraded in the cell?

I couldn't find the proper keywords for a pubmed search yielding useful results... as the fluorescence decreases I guess the conjugated pi-system gets oxidized? Are the metabolic processes known?

Degradation or unfolding of the protein leads to loss of fluorescence of the chromophore due to its exposure to water. I can't find anything about what happens to the chromophore once the protein is degraded.
