I would like to run some experiments about anti-cachexia drugs screening, using in vitro model of cachexi. But after I reviewed some articles I found that all researchers used in vivo animal models. Could somebody tell me if any kind of in vitro cachexia models exist?
Dear friend, Cachexia is a term applied at at the whole organism level in animals and people and administration of certain cytokines like TNF alpa over prolonged period is shown to induce experimental cachexia in animal models. However, most of the in vitro systems use cell cultures or cell lines, tissue culture or at the best organ culture, where the term applied is atrophy instead. But one must remember that in cachexia, if we look at the organismal level almost all the organs and tissues show varying degree of atrophy. Therefore, there may be some in vitro correlates of cachexia, if standardized so.
