Is there any explanation to the red color seen for the first time yesterday on the northwestern side of the Habbaniyah Lake, central Iraq?

The red color is not restricted to the water but also seen on the adjacent soil.

There appears to be a more intense red in the imaged stream that is close to the centre of the colour spread. This suggests that some natural compound such as ferric iron which has a red colour might be leaching out of the soil. However, given the sudden appearance of the red colour, it is more likely to be a ‘bloom’ of rapidly growing algae.
