Basically, media studies should be considered as a specific topic or sub-field of communication studies, as these latter are generally addressed to analyze communication processes (also under the physical or zoological point of view) and particularly human capacity (and specificity) of producing and transferring meaning and symbols. For this reason, communication studies must (but also media studies can) use many different disciplines (sociology, anthropology, informatics, engineering, semiology, history, etc.)

Communication studies focuses on the exchange of thoughts or feelings using symbols using all channels (or means or communication). Media studies, as a part of communication studies, narrows investigation to mass media channels, or to messages that have been "mass-mediated." Institutions that consider the two to be different usually have a school or department of mass media or journalism.
It is a universally accepted fact that Communication Studies encompasses much broader areas as diverse as Sociology, health communication and development communication. Media Studies on the other hand is a sub-field under the broader umbrella of Communication Studies. Most Universities in the West, especially in the United States, usually have "Department of Communication Studies".
The field of Media Studies tends to critique the media. The much broader field of Communication Studies does that as well, and it also trains students for careers in the media.
How would one situate a research on media coverage within the field of communication studies. And connect media coverage as a topic within the subject of Media Studies within the Discipline of Journalism within the Field of Communication studies.
Communication Studies may include media, but also includes interpersonal communication, group dynamics, rhetoric, persuasion, argumentation, etc.
I personally see Media Studies and Communication Studies as different disciplines because they use different theoretical bases.
The Communication Studies analysis of media is based on Speech Communication theory. The Media Studies analysis of media is based on Mass Communication theory.
