According from Microbiology book by Mahon, xylose-lysine-desoxycholate agar (XLD agar) is a selective, differential and a primary plating medium used to isolate Shigella and Salmonella from stool and other specimens containing mixed biota.

To differentiate Salmonella parathyphi and Shigella. Salmonella spp. has a red colonies with black center while Shigella spp. has yellow colonies with black center. To enhance the blackening of Salmonella spp., you will incubate it for 48hrs at 35 degree celsius.
