The reason for the MO-SPR approach is simply that a MO-SPR setup allows for a simple modulation of the sensing signal. Therefore what you lose in signal amplitude (the MOSPR signal is much smaller than the SPR one, for instance in TMOKE configuration) is gained in Signal to Noise (SNR) ratio, with hopefully a final performance which is better than the traditional one. In my opinion it is still to be seen that a MOSPR setup is better than a SPR one, but still the idea behind it is interesting.
