Is there any crop model that can describe the distributions of heavy metals in different organs and their behaviors during crop developments? Although there are many expeirmental studies on the distributions of heavy metals, I have not found any crop model which has succeeded to involve the heavy metals' mechanism processes. is it possible to construct such model?
Zhao: I am not aware of any crop models that accurate capture biomass accumulation over time and accurately predicts uptake of specific "heavy metals". However, i've discussed this topic with one of my colleagues who has experience conducting researcher on uptake of 17 or so minerals in rice whose research suggests major difference exist comparing genotypes.

I never find such a crop model to describe heavy metals process, please refer to some similar works by Professor Liu Xiangnan using DA technique in China Geology University.
I think you better can use some common crop or plant for understanding the plant mechanism under same type. For example, rice can give you the heavy metal uptake (especially arsenic) mechanism in the plants of Poaceae family.
On the other hand, if you use Pteris vitatta, then you can get some info about how Arsenic uptake mechanism works in the Fern species. So, its not like Arabidopsis model for all kind of heavy metals. But it also different metals too
Uptake of heavy metal in the same land is different by crops it's mean for behavior of uptake of heavy metals you should be taken different concentration of heavy metal in soil and then culture the difference crops in quarters and monthly you harvest some of that and measures the concentration of heavy metals in different part of crops. Your distinction between "heavy" and "toxic" metals is correct, which is the reason why my previous emails discussed the uptake of 'minerals". Lee's research identifies the form of each of the 17 or so mineral that his team measured being taken up. A few are heavy metals but most are not, and some are potentially harmful to plants and/or humans and some are not. Lee can provide a much clearer interpretation.
Dr.Towe and other colleagues.I wish to clarify the difference between the heavy metals and toxic metals.Heavy metals are elements that have a high atomic weight and density at least 5 times greater than that of water(5 g/cc).With in the heavy metals,there are two groups of elements. Truly toxic elements like arsenic,cadmium,chromium,lead,nickle and mercury which are found at contaminated sites We can call them toxic metals.Heavy metals like cobalt,copper,chromium,iron,magnesium,manganese,molybdenum,nickle,selenium and zinc are essential elements that are required for various physiological functions in living organisms.Some essential elements like copper, chromium, zinc and nickle become toxic to organisms if their concentration increase with in a narrow range at contaminated site.
It is difficult to develop and use models for uptake of heavy metals by plants as heavy metals are varied in their behavior and and also plants are diverse.However, I have come across in literature some models for studying the behavior of heavy metals in soil and their transport in soil.But it appears to me those not followed universally.I think they need refinement and validation for wider acceptance.
@ Prof. Rao, may be you can also include there is also a category that called metalloid, which feature is like between metal and non metal. But due to their toxic effect, they also include in the heavy metal category like arsenic, antimoni.

Dr.Towe,I only tried to further clarify with criteria and examples.I have some exposure to the popular simulation models like DSSAT,ASPSIM ( Simulation models)and QUEFTS(not a simulation model but statistical).There is another model INFOCROP. To the best of my knowledge these models do not cover/include micronutrients (predominantly beneficial heavy metals at lower concentrations of their supply to plants).Currently the models are used for N,P, and K,the major nutrients.For toxic heavy metals, I am not aware of any model.Recently we discussed the issue of improving models in researchgate.
