Is there any alternative to EDAC (1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide)?

In thiolation of polymers ususally EDAC (1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide) is used as activator / reagent while cystine and polymers with -COOH are used. can we used any thing else instead of EDAC??? i mean alternative to this reagent??
