Is there an R package available for US EPA's Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF)?

Dear All,

Greetings. I want to use the US EPA's Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) technique with R language. However, I couldn't find the PMF package on the CRAN webpage. Although Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is available, it's not a suitable alternative for my needs. Could anyone suggest an R package or alternative source for implementing PMF in R?

Hello Waqar,

US EPA is a standalone free software. You need to download it and install it on your computer. There is no API for a programming language like R or Python to interface with the US EPA's code. This is partly because the software runs a specially licensed instance of Paatero's multilinear engine ME-2.

I suggest you download and install the US EPA software on your computer, analyze your data within the program, export the results as CSV, and analyze it in R like any other dataset. The software's manual is very informative and helpful.
