Hello dear RG community.
I'm wondering if there is an open source software to run a PIV laser.
I know about OpenPIV, but that thing only post-processes the images. I can't wrap my head around how to get the images themselves. To get the images I need a laser. To run the laser I need software that runs it. So, is there open source software that runs PIV lasers?
And a follow-up question. What is the PIV work flow of the people who use OpenPIV? How do you get the images? If I purchase, for instance, Dantec or LaVision software it does both: runs the laser and processes the images. Then what the point of using OpenPIV?

If anybody is interested, I've found an answer.
OpenPIV doesn't have an option to control lasers and cameras. PIVlab does have an option to control particular brands of lasers and cameras. Alex Liberzon , we've already discussed this question in the google group. In fact, I posted this question here before you let me into the group. For all the others interested in that: please, consider joining the discussion in the google group. I am not sure if I'm allowed to post the link to that particular conversation. If Dr. Liberzon allows, I can post it here. I actually think it would be very nice to have something conceptually resembling Linux: you buy your own hardware (laser, camera, PTU) and then run them with the open source software. At least Dantec's prices are ridiculous. So, if we had an opportunity to run the hardware with open source software, that would make some difference I suppose.
Not all commercial systems have ridiculous prices... I think it's a noble undertaking to reinvent the wheal, but maybe all these efforts and brain power could be used to do actual experiments rather than create a potentially substandard PIV system... :)
Calling open source solutions “substandard” is not appropriate. Especially from a commercial vendor.
Ivan Nepomnyashchikh you are more than welcome to contact me for your thoughts about our software pricing. I will gladly explain what you pay for (which functions are included) and how these functions can be used in acquiring / analyzing the PIV data.
Alex Liberzon in order to have an open source software to control the PIV hardware you will need a good control of the synchronizer. So in your development you should consider the functions you want to include in your synchronizer. Thats not what i meant. We all know and agree that open source PIV software is genarally great and stable. However considering that double pulse PIV lasers alone cost usually over 30,000 USD, adding control mechanism will not be very helpful since user will still need to add expensive laser. Good CW lasers with 1W and up can also be expensive. Sadly i have seen quite a few subdtandard self made PIV systems over the last 10 years put together, with cheap lasers bought in different places and I think its a waste of creative energy to do this to save few dollars when complete commercial systems start at less than 10,000 USD. The time, effort and money spent by university brains developping such substandard systems can far exceed the benefits…
Thank you Wojciech Majewski and Gökhan Ergin . I totally understand your position. Gökhan Ergin thank you, I have an understanding regarding what we are paying for.
I agree that, at universities, we are funded by grants. And we are supposed to be fully committed to do the highest quality work for the grant money. That includes not deviating our attention to side projects.
However, we still have some personal free time for rest. And as Dostoevskiy said, the best rest is change of activity. So why not change the activity to looking into the possibility of creating open source PIV system control software every once in a while during our personal free time?
It won't hurt and, from a user's perspective, it is better to have as many choices as possible.
Also, it is possible to bring any technology to the given standard. That includes open source software. OpenPIV is an example of that I think.
