I have many scanned aerial photos, and I want to "locate" them (ideally ortho-rectify) with the ultimate aim to stitch together a mosaic.In some instances, I think the camera parameters would be available, and presumably this is helpful extra info, I am interested in the answer with and without the camera geometry.
I know roughly where these are from and have numerous other base files. Is there some way to automate the recognition of points on the photo with points in the digital terrain? Or is this going to be manual / heads up digitizing?

Joachim: Thanks for good idea. The mosaic works well for the sample photos (excellent speed and great result) but is not doing a good job with some very old aerial photos (we have a low res JPG), The photos overlap by say 20% as the aircraft progresses along a flight path. The naked eye can see some obvious correlation, but the "panorama" method did not achieve a lined up match. I am going to try some other image processing ideas from remote sensing. But I think that getting better scans may be a necessary first step.
