GPS device could be ably replaced by an Android application called GPS essentials. I just need to know if there is an Android application that could replace Range finder on field?
You see Janet, the application I am referring to is an android version of the Range finder. Hope you know about the Range finder, but still, Range finder is a device like a binocular, but it is a monocular, with which you will be able to view an object and find the distance between the object and the place you stand. Largely used in bird surveys, precisely land dwelling birds. Once the bird is spotted in the survey, the nearby object that is huge enough (as we can't view a mobile bird and record the distance) is viewed and the distance would be recorded. This device becomes handy as it can be used to mark the areas of quadrat without actually laying a quadrat over the field which is equally time consuming and disturbing to the insects, mostly Orthopterans. As the device is a bit expensive, I am not able to afford it for my study. That is the reason I am looking for an Android application...........
Thank you Jasmina. This app works but it has limitations. I am looking for something that can help me shoot (capture) any object (could be a tree, rock or stone, etc.) right in the field and help calculate the distance between the object and me....
There have been range finder apps developed for tracking marine mammals at sea, however I don't know if for your purpose it'll work. There is an app for iphone available on the app store, and the same developers were trialling the android one, so if it's not available yet, it may be worth getting in touch with them:
