I had this pcpdfwin software installed in my 32bit computer. Now when I'm trying to install the same in my laptop with win7 it is showing compatibility problems? Any suggestions ?
There are some application you can use to show and matching XRD spectra from your PDF2 or PDF4 database.
1. Match! crystal impact
2. Xpert Highscore
3. XPowder
4. Jade
5. etc.
But, you must realize the application aren't open source or free.
The software QualX (http://wwwba.ic.cnr.it/content/qualx) can be used upon registration (for free), will run under Windows 7 and will read old, outdated, versions of the Powder Diffraction File and help you run a nice graphical search-match. But still you'll have an old PDF2 database. You should check at the ICDD (www.icdd.com) for database updates and additional useful software. Best of luck.
ICDD PDF4 database is the best but it's a close database and very expensive
I think the alternative database is the Crystallography open database (COD) from International Union for Crystallography (IUCr) which is open database and free of charges and you can get your reference online as a CIF file

Then you can use crystal impact software ( I preffer crystal impact Diamond http://www.crystalimpact.com/download/diamond/demo/Diamond-Demo-Setup-32i.exe ) and use this program to open CIF file to make your refinment and matching then calculations
also the PCPDFWIN & PDF2 does not work on win7 64bit
but it works on win7 32 bit only
@Ranjan: the answer depends on what you want to do. If you are just interested in common phases then the old PDF-2 database is ok. It is quite obsolete both in the number, quality of entries, capabilities (it does not contain coordinates) and the licensing policy has changed. The PCPDFWIN software is no longer used (as now the database is relational and not static as in that version) and it does not run on 64 bit systems. Be careful about usage on multiple machines: as far as I remember the license is granted for non concurrent use only.
@Natheer: the PDF-4 is not a "close database". It is a commercial product even if ICDD is a non for profit organization (anybody, in principle, can become a member and a lot of money is given back to the community under the form of grants). As such, there are copyright issues to be taken into account, as well as an account for the work spent in cataloging the data. The only difference between the PDF and the COD or other databases (e.g. ICSD) is therefore quality (and number of entries where the PDF-4 is definitely the winner both in terms of unique entries, atomic coordinates and also experimental patterns stored as xy data). Each single entry of the PDF is multiply checked for consistency, is cataloged in subfiles, linked atomic position data and high quality diffraction pattern (if available). This results in less garbage or false positives when you analyze complex mixtures. By the way the COD is NOT the database of the IUCr.
You can get further info @ www.icdd.com and of course if the copy of the database you have is licensed, you can still have some support from the people there.
Unfortunately quality is not for free. Someone in the end has to pay for it.
I was just able (today) to install PCPDFWIN on to a VirtualPC (WinXP)
under MSWindows7-Pro(64-bit), using the original two-floppies (copied
to USB drives) and the CD (PDF-R2000 PDF2). It made it easier to
copy the contents of the CD to a virtual drive (including hidden WinIND
folder/directory).
I do not have the $5K to get ICDD/PDF4 just for a few educational labs.
ICSD needed constant updating, by the nature of their license.
